This study aims to assess the viability of the deployment of hybrid renewable energy systems for the supply of sustainable electricity in a remote village in Indonesia. A number of different systems were analyzed using the HOMER simulation software based on real data of solar potential, consumption patterns, and actual local costs. Quantitative results indicated that the best system would consist of an 85 kW photovoltaic array, a 60 kW diesel generator, and a 120 kWh lithium-ion battery bank. In terms of performance, this system was able to provide 164,250 kWh of energy per year, of which 68.5% was generated by the solar source. From an economic perspective, there are calculations showing that the levelized cost of energy for this hybrid system stands at $0.32/kWh, representing a 33% reduction from the pure diesel case scenario of $0.48/kWh. The total net present value of the project for 20 years was estimated at $218,500, representing 30% savings against the diesel option. The major environmental impact this project will bring forth is an annual reduction of carbon dioxide emission of about 23,650 kg and a 62% saving in diesel fuel consumption. This study concludes that renewable hybrid systems are not only technically feasible but also highly economically viable and key to sustainable electrification and closing the energy gap in rural communities in Indonesia. © 2025, Ecozone, OAIMDD.
