English language proficiency plays a crucial role in the global competitiveness of university graduates, particularly in countries like Indonesia, where English is perceived as a gateway to global opportunities. However, the dynamics of English language education at the tertiary level in Indonesia present unique challenges stemming from the country’s superdiverse linguistic landscape and the historical context of English language teaching policies. This chapter provides an in-depth exploration of English language education in Indonesian universities, tracing its historical development and policy evolution. It examines existing literature on pedagogical innovations and teacher education approaches aimed at enhancing English language teaching in Indonesian higher education institutions. Additionally, the chapter proposes recommendations for improving the quality of English language education at the tertiary level in Indonesia. By addressing these issues, stakeholders can better equip university graduates with the language skills necessary for global engagement and career success. © 2026 selection and editorial matter, Subhan Zein and Fuad Abdul Hamied; individual chapters, the contributors.
