This chapter addresses the issue of teaching reading in Indonesia. It provides contextualized reading instruction within the broader landscape of English language education in Indonesia, where constructive and whole-language approaches are utilized. The specific aspect of pedagogy was examined through an exploration of socio-cultural dynamics and pedagogical practices of adolescent learners while fostering essential literacy skills for academic and lifelong success. The impact of an online platform on tertiary-level reading skills and aligning Kurikulum Merdeka’s [Emancipated Curriculum] learning outcomes with contemporary reading theories, which emphasize the development of higher-order thinking skills was discussed. Recommendations and future research including a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities inherent in teaching reading in the Indonesian context were proposed. These recommendations were made to improve reading education in Indonesia. © 2026 selection and editorial matter, Subhan Zein and Fuad Abdul Hamied; individual chapters, the contributors.
