Abstract

MathCityMap integrates mathematics learning with real-world geographical contexts, enabling students to engage in interactive and contextual learning. This study aims to provide a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of global research trends on the use of MathCityMap in mathematics learning, with the objectives of mapping publication and citation patterns, identifying geographic distribution, and revealing main research focuses in the field. The research adopts a systematic methodology based on the PRISMA framework, involving identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion stages, with data sourced from the Scopus database. To analyze the results, several software tools were utilized: Microsoft Excel was used to create graphs illustrating publication trends and diagrams for geographic distribution, while citation metrics were extracted and tabulated using Publish or Perish. Additionally, VOSviewer was employed to analyze keyword co-occurrence and visualize research themes. The analysis was performed using 25 publications retrieved from Scopus database, spanning 2019 to 2025. The results reveal fluctuations in publication and citation trends, with Germany leading in the number of publications. The year 2021 marked a significant surge in citations, totalling 40, despite the publication count for that year being lower than in other years. In contrast, 2024 recorded the highest number of publications. Research focus was identified in three main clusters: mathematics education and STEM education, MathCityMap in the concept of math trails, and the integration of digital technology in mathematics learning. These findings provide important perspectives on the progress and spread of MathCityMap research, supporting future efforts to leverage technology for enhancing mathematics education. © 2026 American Institute of Physics Inc..
