Enhancing e-waste management in Indonesia: a study of knowledge levels among TVET electrical participants and current practices

Abstract

The knowledge, awareness, and practices related to electronic waste (e-waste) management were examined among 336 Indonesian Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students majoring in electrical engineering. Using a quantitative research approach and a structured questionnaire, the study assessed students’ understanding of e-waste definitions, hazardous elements, disposal methods, and associated environmental and health risks. The findings reveal that while students demonstrated a high level of awareness, particularly regarding the classification and dangers of e-waste, there were notable gaps in regulatory knowledge, policy effectiveness, and infrastructure accessibility. Although public awareness campaigns and recycling incentives were found to have a positive influence, actual engagement in responsible disposal behaviours remained moderate. These results highlight the need to strengthen e-waste education through improved curriculum integration, policy literacy, infrastructure provision, and behaviour-driven interventions. The study advocates for the inclusion of behavioural change models such as the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) and recommends enhanced collaboration between TVET institutions and industry stakeholders. Future research should explore interdisciplinary comparisons, assess institutional readiness, and test the effectiveness of incentive-based and digital interventions across diverse settings. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Japan KK, part of Springer Nature 2026.
