Abstract

The aim of this study is to see mathematical representation of students' high, moderate, and low mathematical abilities based on polya's strategy. This study is a qualitative research using an interpretive paradigm. The subjects were class VIII students of a junior high school in Jambi City who were selected using a purposive sampling technique, 3 students were selected with the following conditions: 1 student with high mathematical ability, 1 student with moderate mathematical ability, and 1 student with low mathematical ability. This study was started by giving a mathematical ability test to class VIII and continued by giving mathematical representation test to 3 students were selected then interviewing those 3 students. After obtaining the data, analysis data was carried out. The results of this study found that in solving non-routine mathematical number pattern problems, students with high mathematical abilities can use all three forms of representation (symbolic, visual, and verbal), students with moderate mathematical abilities can use two forms of representation (verbal and verbal), while students with low mathematical ability cannot use all three forms of representation. Based on the results obtained, students use different forms of mathematical representation while solving non-routine mathematical problems, it is caused by cognitive differences in students. Through this study, it is shown that it is important for teachers to teach various forms of mathematical representation, so that students can use the forms of representation according to their cognitive abilities. © 2023 Author(s).
