Abstract

Currently, research is being conducted to promote Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTs) among EFL young learners. However, using Digital Storytelling (DST) in online teaching to promote HOTs in EFL young learners is still uncommon. As a result, this study is proposed to evaluate the use of DST in fostering HOTs among EFL young learners. The research design for this qualitative study was Classroom Action Research (CAR), and the instruments were online classroom observation, interviews, and document analysis. Those were studied using HOTs, DST, and EFL young learners theory. This critically participatory action research process involved six students and one teacher as participants in the processes of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. In order to reach the intended result, this study went through two cycles. Data study revealed that the use of DST promoted HOTs. Critical thinking was encouraged in the categories of parse (73%), evaluate (60%), infer (60%), shift perspective (80%), and transfer (53%). Meanwhile, creative thinking was encouraged in the categories to imagine (73%), interpret/synthesize (46%), induce/theorize (66%), reframe (53%), and generate (46%). However, due to technical issues, the teacher had difficulty adopting this strategy. © 2023 Author(s).
