This study aims to determine trends and research opportunities on mental models and science education through bibliometric analysis. Article data obtained from the Google Scholar and Scopus databases tends to increase year to year. In Google Scholar, the number of articles decreased from 2018-2021, but in 2022 the number of articles on the topic increased again. Meanwhile, for data obtained from Scopus, the number of articles published tends to be stable and unaffected by the Covid-19 pandemic situation. Mental model research trends relate to several topics, for example problems, representation, science education, understanding, and reasoning. On the other hand, there are opportunities to conduct research related to explanation, phenomena, internal representation, prediction, and STEM. Mental model research is conducted in several fields like science, chemistry, computer science, earth, engineering, environment, mathematics, and physics. However, the subject of physics or physics education still rarely appears. Thus, it can be an opportunity to conduct research on mental models. © School of Engineering, Taylor’s University.
