The main goal of this research was to assess the application of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in improving the mathematical reasoning abilities of Indonesian secondary school students. A meta-analysis method was applied in this research to review similar articles found on Google Scholar, Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), Garuda Portal, and IOP Science. Based on searches, ten articles that fulfilled the inclusion criteria were analyzed with Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) software. This analysis found evidence for the combined effect size in a large effect category, which is 1,281. It shows that the PBL model can improve students' mathematical reasoning abilities more effectively than conventional learning. Starting PBL by presenting problems will encourage students to use their mathematical reasoning abilities to find solutions. In addition, there are five leading characteristics examined as moderate variables. Based on the study characteristics, implementation of the PBL model at different levels of education and sampling area will cause differences in the improvement of students' mathematical reasoning abilities. Meanwhile, there was no significant difference in other research characteristics: sample size, sampling technique, or year of research. Hence, this study can be considered in developing strategies for implementing the PBL as a learning model to enhance students' mathematical reasoning skills to the maximum. © 2023 Author(s).
