Learning Biodiversity Material Through a Permaculture System Assisted With Eco-Gamification to Improve Students' Anticipatory Competency and Scientific Communication Skills

Abstract

Environment-based learning can be used to improve learners' understanding of sustainability concepts. Permaculture assisted by eco-gamification is one of the innovative learning resources that integrates environment-based learning with game elements. This study aims to integrate permaculture system assisted by eco-gamification in biodiversity learning to improve students' anticipatory competence and scientific communication skills. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group, with 25 students in the experimental class and 23 students in the control class. The observation results showed that the average learning implementation reached 93% in the experimental class and 89% in the control class which was categorized as very good. In anticipatory competence although it did not experience a significant increase based on the independent sample t-test (p = 0.081> 0.05) but the N-Gain analysis showed that the experimental class experienced a higher increase of 0.51, medium category with 100% learning completeness compared to the control class 0.47, medium category with 96% completeness. In scientific communication skills, the Mann-Whitney U test results (p = 0.508 > 0.05) showed that there was no significant difference between the experimental and control groups, the N-Gain analysis of the experimental class reached 0.51, medium category, higher than the control class which reached 0.47. This shows that the permaculture system assisted by eco-gamification is more effective than learning in the control class. Therefore, the effectiveness of learning in improving anticipatory competence and scientific communication skills still needs to be developed further. Therefore, the researcher suggests using project-based learning methods so that students are more active in the exploration and application of sustainability solutions, as well as extending the duration of the intervention so that students have more time to understand the concepts taught. © 2026 American Institute of Physics Inc..
