Critical reading in relation to cultural literacy is defined as ones’ ability to find and explore cultural information in accurate, fast, precise, and wise manners. Improving cultural literacy is one of ways to improve the critical reading ability of elementary school students. However, some educators have not yet integrated the values of local wisdom and local culture in their classroom teaching practices. This study examined the cultural literacy contained in critical reading instructions for elementary school students, including its advantages and challenges. In this literature review study, the researcher analyzed a number of textbooks, accredited national and international journal articles and regulations related to cultural literacy in the critical reading instructions for elementary school students. The results of this study highlighted the importance of improving cultural literacy in order to enhance elementary school students’ critical reading skills to satisfactory level. The improvement could be applied by integrating real-life situations into classroom learning that would allow students to independently connect existing knowledge that they previously gained with real situations. Teachers are expected to be capable of applying reading instructions that help students learn by exposing them to real situations that are contextual to their daily lives. © 2023 American Institute of Physics Inc..
