Abstract

This study aims to analyze the learning obstacles of primary and secondary school students in solving contextual mathematical problems. The method used in this study was a qualitative method through case study. There were 36 grade-five students and 66 grade-eight students from one of primary and secondary school in Bandung participated in this study. A diagnostic test of learning obstacles was examined to the students then follow-up interview was conducted to several students. The results showed that linguistics and mathematical formulations were the main obstacles for majority of students in both primary and secondary schools when they solved contextual mathematical problems. Thus, this finding suggests that it is important to emphasize the mathematics learning in terms of language understanding and formulating from the context of the problem. © 2022 American Institute of Physics Inc..
