IMPROVEMENT OF WORK METHODS AND STANDARD TIME BASED ON MOVEMENT STUDIES USING MTM - 1

Abstract

Companies frequently struggle to meet output requirements. Sewing process is one of the procedures that affect the achievement of predetermined production targets since it takes the most time compared to other processes. As line 1 has a different processing time than the sample section, the percentage of non-achievement of the production objective shows that the line with the highest percentage is line 1. Based on these issues, it is required to improve the sewing line 1 operator's working method and create an SOP. Improvements to the work approach were made by balancing the movements of the right and left hands using Methods-Time Measurement (MTM - 1). Layout improvements were made to minimize the resulting standard time, the layout was designed using the operator's normal range of 15 inches. Improvements to the working method carried out on sewing line 1 resulted in the recommended standard time for operator 1 1.85 minutes, operator 2A 2.07 minutes, operator 2B 2.07 minutes, operator 3 1.73 minutes, operator 4A 1.81 minutes, operator 4B 1.63 minutes, operator 5 1.18 minutes, operator 6 is 1.9 minutes, operator 7 is 1.6 minutes, operator 8 is 1.63 minutes, operator 9 is 1.97 minutes, operator 10 is 1.74 minutes, operator 11 is 2.19 minutes and operator 12 is 2.21 minutes. This indicates that the MTM method is effective in reducing processing time. It is also implied implementing economic principles help the effectiveness and efficiency of sewing machine performance. © School of Engineering, Taylor’s University.
