Abstract

Conventional learning which is one-way and the insufficient availability of contextual teaching materials makes chemistry difficult for students. One of the contexts in society that can be used as material in chemistry learning is the manufacture of Mg(OH)2from sea water. Seawater is sustainable and is a potential source for processing to produce Mg(OH)2. Mg(OH)2is a compound that plays an important role in human life, one of which is in the pharmaceutical field as raw material for making mag medicine. These compounds act as antacids to neutralize stomach acid. This study aims to determine the feasibility of learning devices using the project based learning model in the process of making Mg(OH)2from sea water. The research contribution is for education to improve the chemistry practice learning spesifically in senior high school. The method used in the study is R & D (Research and Development) with a Dick&Carey models. Based on the assessment of the feasibility results, it can be seen from the overall average score of all aspects, which is 91.25%. Based on the expert's assessment of the feasibility of the teaching materials developed by the researchers, it is shown that the project-based learning tools in the process of making Mg(OH)2from seawater are feasible to use. © 2022 American Institute of Physics Inc..
