Abstract

Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticle using plant extracts has been developed to produce drugs that are more active, more effective, and more stable, especially as antioxidants. 4 articles from the Q1, 3 articles from the Q2, and 1 article from the Q3 journal were collected to be reviewed. This review article uses a narrative review model. Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles using plant extracts from Alpinia katsumadai, Prunus japonica, Artocarpus altilis, Elephantopus scaber, Bergenia ciliata, Thymus kotschyanus, Momordica cymbalaria, and Alternanthera sessilis last for 10 minutes to 24 hours at room temperature. FTIR spectra showed that flavonoids, phenolics, terpenoids, and organic acids present in plant extracts act as bioreductors in the biosynthesis process. The silver nanoparticles showed unique characteristics such as: 1) having an average particle size of 12.6 to 51 nm, 2) typical UV-Vis absorption at a wavelength of 400-450 nm, and 3) a face-centered cubic (FCC) crystal structure. They also showed higher antioxidant activity compared to plant extracts itself. The smaller nanoparticles showed higher antioxidant activity at concentrations of 300 to 500μg/mL. Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles using plant extracts can be carried out rapidly and environmentally friendly. Flavonoids, terpenoids, phenolics, and organic acids act as reducing agents in the synthesis of silver nanoparticles. Silver nanoparticles synthesized using plant extracts showed higher antioxidant activity than the extract itself. © 2022, Moroccan Journal of Chemistry. All Rights Reserved.
