This study aims to investigate the Zone of Concept Image Differences (ZCID) in the topic of similarity, that can potentially lead to the emergence of learning obstacles that may be caused based on the gap between Scientific Conception (SC) and Concept Image (CI). The research is a phenomenological interpretive study on Didactical Design Research (DDR). Participants consisted of 32 students in grade IX of junior high school in Tasikmalaya Indonesia who were selected using purposive sampling technique. Data collection was collected by diagnostic test, in depth interview and document analysis. The results showed that there were ZCID in students' conceptual understanding about similarity concept. There is a difference in conceptual understanding between SC and CI regarding the definition of similarity in polygon and triangle. The findings show that the ZCID that appears is related to the difficulty of connecting the corresponding angles with the corresponding sides, including learning experiences that are limited to the context of numerical relationships between images making it difficult for students to apply to other contexts, which has the potential to create ontological obstacle, epistemological obstacle and didactical obstacle. © 2026 American Institute of Physics Inc..
