Mathematical problem-solving ability is one of the five process standards in NCTM. This study aims to investigate the ability of prospective elementary school teachers to solve mathematical problems. The research method used is the qualitative descriptive method. The subjects of this study were 15 students in the sixth semester. The students completed four questions of problem-solving abilities about the concept of fractions. The results showed that: 1) the students had difficulty in understanding the meaning of the questions; 2) students rarely solve non-routine maths problems; 3) students solve problems procedurally; 4) students rarely use mathematical modeling in solving problems. One of the factors that cause low problem-solving skills is students who are not used to working on word problems. The findings of weaknesses and mistakes made in solving mathematical problem-solving ability test questions can provide further information for educators in formulating further learning strategies. Suggestions for further research are that researchers can conduct similar studies with more participants and different methods. © School of Engineering, Taylor's University
