Development of transformative learning model in construction workers training for building work field implementers to support disaster mitigation efforts in earthquake-prone areas

Abstract

This research aimed to develop a transformative learning model training program and implement this program to improve the competence of workers. The method used during this research was education research and development (R&D). The implementation of the method adopted stages developed by Thiagarajan (1974) is known as the four-dimensional model, which consists of defining, designing, developing, and disseminating. In the investigation, training activities were conducted in the Lunang Silaut subdistrict, Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatra Province. The research produced a transformative learning model training program for construction workers, where the development stage during training concerning this investigation began with validation of the learning model by experts. These validation components consisted of the feasibility of content, presentation, language, and learning media. The results of this phase revealed an average of 85 valid categories, and implementation of the program had a positive effect on increasing knowledge. Additionally, the understanding of workers concerning the term, basic concept, implementation of work production and knowledge to produce earthquake-resistant buildings has improved. The results of the activities in the research showed that workers’ knowledge concerning building construction increased by 52%. However, individual initial knowledge before training was 33%, and after participation, it improved to 85%. There was an increase of 52%, which was included in the moderate category. The results revealed that the Transformative Learning Model Training Program had a positive effect on increasing the understanding of earthquake-resistant building construction among workers. In conclusion, good knowledge of building construction has an impact on disaster mitigation efforts, namely, structural mitigation. Copyright (c) 2026 The Authors.
