Abstract

This study aims to analyze an apology speech act in Japanese and Sundanese, focusing on its’ strategies, expressions, and awareness. The data in this study was collected using DCT (Discourse Completion Test) to investigate about apology strategies and expressions towards five interlocutors in a misunderstanding situation. A Likert scale questionnaire was also used to examine apology awareness including the necessity to apology and the feeling of responsibility of both language speakers in the situation. The participants of this study were 74 Japanese Native Speakers (JNS) and 78 Sundanese Native Speakers (SNS). The collected data were then classified based on semantic formulae and analyzed based on Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory. The findings showed that from nine apology strategies found from the data, both JNS and SNS similarly used Confirmation, Apology, and Repair. However, JNS tended to acknowledge responsibility regardless of the speaker’s innocence while SNS preferred to give explanations to clear the misunderstanding. Based on politeness theory, JNS and SNS used both negative and positive politeness strategies strategically in the situations according to the interlocutors. Further, the relationship between awareness and strategy use by JNS and SNS is also discussed in the paper. © 2021 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
