Practical work, including fieldwork, is a vital part of science education. The practicum can teach critical and creative thinking skills to students. Critical thinking skills mean analyzing and evaluating information through observation, experience, communication, or reading systematically. It involves the abilities of creating new and original ideas that contribute to scientific details, presenting experimental results to understand science products, developing designs for scientific activities, and determining other plans that are useful for life. Consequently, creative thinking skills are needed by someone to keep up with rapidly growing technological advances. This study aims to describe the critical and creative thinking skills of prospective science teacher students on biology materials and describe the implementation of the practicum in biology lectures. We applied a mixed-method and collected data using document studies, student questionnaires, student interviews, and tests of critical and creative thinking skills. It was conducted from May to July 2022. Then, we described all of the data. The results demonstrated that the practicum implementation was still verified and the use of cookbooks severely limited the growth of the students' critical thinking abilities. The test showed that the critical thinking skills of prospective science teacher students were classified as moderate, while their creative thinking skills were classified in the low category. © 2025 Author(s).
