The development of tourism makes the evolution of sustainable tourism very important to be carried out. Although attention to sustainable tourism is increasing, the evolution of this concept shows complex dynamics, with a shift from environmental impact management to a more holistic integration of social and economic aspects. This study aims to identify and analyze trends and key themes in the development of sustainable tourism through a systematic review of the literature. The method used is the PRISMA method where scientific articles from the last five years (2020–2024) are filtered from the Scopus, Web of Science, Crossref, and Google Scholar databases, with an in-depth analysis of 67 articles focusing on sustainable tourism that meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data collection techniques include selection, assessment, and extraction of information from selected sources. Data analysis was carried out using bibliometric techniques with VOSviewer software to identify trends, challenges, and best practices in sustainable tourism. The results of the study indicate that sustainable tourism has evolved from environmental management, community empowerment, and environmental impact to a holistic approach involving collaboration between various stakeholders. This emphasizes the need for an integrated and community-based approach in destination management to maximize the benefits of sustainable tourism. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2026.
