This study was initiated by the lack of students' ability in identifying microscopic-macroscopic algae, including the ability to make dichotomic key, classification and communication skills. And very little algae have been empowered in Indonesia as a marine island country. This research used a pre-experimental method. The initial development of the practical work program was based on preliminary research conducted at one of the state universities in Bandung, West Java. This study involved 38 biology first-year college students. Data were collected through several instruments in the form of observation sheet on 6E learning by design, observation sheet of logical thinking test (TOLT) and microscopic-macroscopic algae identification. The implementation of the Cryptogamic practicum was carried out through several stages included: engage, explore, explain, engineer, enrich, evaluate. Data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results show that the program of 6E learning by design in Cryptogamic practicum could provide improve college students' logical thinking and the ability to identify microscopic-macroscopic algae. The findings of this study include students' active in the concept of microscopic algae but were less active in the macroscopic algae concept and there have good the ability logical thinking also has good identification skills. © 2019 Author(s).
