Abstract

Innovative communication technologies and protocols encourage reliable and secure energy measurement systems. This supports the energy supply system with a smart grid model. Through infrastructure updates to the grid distribution system, energy measurement enables users and energy providers to perform more efficient and optimal resource management. This paper outlines a detailed description of the evolution of Smart Energy Meters (SEM), starting from mechanical, electronic, and smart meters. SEM interface descriptions are outlined in the measurement infrastructure, starting from Manual Meter Reading (MMR), Automated Meter Reading (AMR), and Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI). Control measurement communication using cable types, including Powerline Communication (PLC), Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), and optical fiber. In comparison, wireless communication control includes Bluetooth, ZigBee, Wi-Fi, Lorawan, cellular, and satellite. SEM communication networks are described as Wide Area Networks (WANs), Field Area Networks (FANs), Neighborhood Area Networks (NANs), and Home Area Networks (HANs). The SEM data transmission network includes control of users' home devices and a detailed view of the capabilities offered by SEM through Fiber to The Home (FTTH) networks integrated with the Internet of Things (IoT) that will be available to address the challenges of the smart grid. IoT-integrated FTTH contributes to the configuration and data transmission network to improve SEM performance in terms of efficiency, reliability, and security of transmission systems. Data transmission networks using FTTH can transmit measurement parameter data to users in remote locations. It can improve SEM resources and services to ensure the required level of energy quality. © 2025 Author(s).
