Abstract

Illegal waste dumping remains a pressing environmental issue in many urban and peri-urban areas of Indonesia. Traditional monitoring approaches often fall short in detecting, localizing, and quantifying unauthorized disposal activities. This chapter introduces a novel integration of drone-based surveillance and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to address the monitoring challenges. We discuss the theoretical basis of AI-driven image recognition for waste detection, detail the implementation of unmanned aerial vehicles equipped with computer vision systems, and present a case study demonstrating the application in Bandung City, Indonesia. The results highlight the system’s potential to automatically detect and map illegal dumping zones with high accuracy. Furthermore, we propose policy and technological recommendations to scale up its use for improving environmental compliance, transparency, and sustainable urban governance. © 2026 selection and editorial matter, Tonni Agustiono Kurniawan and Abdelkader Anouzla; individual chapters, the contributors.
