PGSD students who will play a large role in providing knowledge to educators are required to be able to master basic abilities in understanding concepts and communicating ideas by developing mathematical thinking skills, especially for elementary school students. This study aims to obtain an overview of the ability to understand mathematical concepts and mathematical communication of PGSD students based on the ability category of each indicator of concept understanding ability and mathematical communication. The subjects of this study were PGSD students in semester 4, the academic year 2024/2025, totaling 25 people at one of the Private Universities in Padang City. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research using a purposive sampling technique. The research instrument is a test of concept understanding and mathematical communication skills. The data obtained in this study is from the answers done by students in the form of test questions about building space material. The results of student work are categorized into five scores (the lowest score is 0, and the highest score is 4). The scoring data was analyzed descriptively-percentage. The results showed that students' concept understanding, mathematical communication skills on instrumental indicators, and the ability to express ideas in the form of drawings and ideas in writing in providing answers to mathematical problems were high, with 84% and 96%, respectively. While on relational indicators and modeling mathematical problems correctly, performing calculations to get a complete and correct solution still needs to be higher, with a percentage of 36%. This proves that students' mathematical concepts and communication skills still need more optimal and in-depth attention. © 2025 Author(s).
