To achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs), we must prepare the next generation, ensuring they are aware of the concept of sustainability and have the competence to take actions in real-life situations. Waste management is a crucial and important topic in our daily lives, and its issues continue to develop day by day because the current system used is unsustainable. In that condition, it is essential for students to study waste management so that they can proactively address future challenges. The purpose of this study is to develop and validate an instrument to measure senior high school students' sustainable awareness and action toward waste management problem. A descriptive study was employed, utilizing 20 key journals from the 'Google Scholar' database - 10 focusing on sustainable awareness and 10 on sustainable action. These journals have priority in terms of citation because they are used as references in many studies. The data collected are mapped and categorized into several indicators, then integrated and described within the context of sustainable waste management. The instrument developed takes the form of a questionnaire. The obtained results indicate that the developed instrument can be utilized to measure students' sustainable awareness and action, particularly concerning the topic of sustainable waste management. The implications of research trends in SDGs and ESD offer opportunities for the development of assessments, technologies, and learning tools in each scientific discipline, where the directions have clear goals and standards. © 2025 Author(s).
