Science education has an important role in developing critical thinking skills and understanding of scientific concepts. Therefore, research related to Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) is important to know. The purpose of this study was to investigate the current research developments and issues related to CLT in secondary education from 2003 to 2023. This study employs bibliometric analysis by acquiring Scopus data, which is then used in conjunction with Vosviewer to display data visualization and network analysis. The findings of this study revealed recent research trends in CLT, namely technology development, development of clinical competency evaluation methods, learning designs that manage cognitive load, use of technology in learning, and development of interactive multimedia. This research provides insight into promising future research directions, such as the integration of technology in education, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in learning, the development of innovative learning design methods, and the exploration of innovative approaches to learning. Further research from various research directions has an impact on increasing learning effectiveness and enriching the practice of science education based on cognitive load theory (CLT). © 2025 Author(s).
