Abstract

This paper presents a design and analysis of 4-element MIMO antenna. The proposed MIMO antenna consists of four planar folded dipole antenna elements. This MIMO antenna operates at frequency 2300-2400 MHz (band 40). It is a squared-compact size of 189 × 189 mm2. This work investigates a partial groundplane and a full groundplane to obtain an optimal design. The simulation results show that partial groundplane yields a good return loss, a low mutual coupling (high isolation), a low VSWR and a higher gain. Using partial groundplane has a good return loss at frequency center 2350 MHz i.e. S11=S44= -29.869 dB, S22=S33= -30.261 dB. In addition, partial groundplane also produces a low mutual coupling (high isolation) in range of -24.915 dB until -60.527 dB. The proposed antenna also has an ideal VSWR which is in range of 1.063-1.066. Gaining, each antenna element produces a gain in range of 7.35-7.81 dB. Partial groundplane gives a 3.5 times higher than the required bandwidth at band 40. This antenna has been designed and analyzed on a simple structure FR4 substrate. This proposed squared-compact size 4-element MIMO antenna has a good characteristic. © 2016 IEEE.
