Objectives. Little empirical work, is currently available relating to the lifestyle behaviours of college students in Indonesia. This research investigated the ability of individual factors of self control on diet (SC-D), health related fitness knowledge (HRFK), and free time motivation (FTM) to predict physical activity level. Methods. Participants consisted of female students of Teacher Education for Primary Schools at the Indonesia University of Education (TEPE-IUE) (n = 246; age 19-22). The instruments consisted of the self-control scale (Grasmick et al., 1993; Delisi et al., 2003), the free time motivation scale (Baldwin & Caldwel, 2003), a health related fitness knowledge test and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-Short Form, 2002). The instruments were adapted for Indonesian participants and the coefficients of reliability (Cronbach-alpha) for the self control scale and free time motivation scale were satisfactory-.80 and.84 respectively. A health-related fitness knowledge test was constructed and validated according to psychometric principles. Reliability of the whole test (40 items) was good (.84 <.05). The total score for PA was calculated by applying IPAQ’s formula: (Walk METs*min*days) + (Mod METs*min*days) + (Vig METs min*days). Female students were classified as physically inactive if they were not meeting the criteria as follows: performing moderate-intensity physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day at least 5 days a week or vigorous-intensity physical activity for at least 20 minutes a day at least 3 days a week (Pescatello et al., 2008). Results. Based on these criteria, of the 246 female students who had completed the survey, the majority (86%) was classified as physically inactive. Multiple regression revealed that health related fitness knowledge (b3= 63.697) was more powerful than self-control on diet (b1=25.086), and free time motivation (b2= 7.055) in predicting physical activity. Conclusion. These findings suggest the importance of health-related fitness knowledge being taught and learned appropriately in order to maximize the potential for a carry-over effect to a healthy lifestyle for students in higher education. © 2017, Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH.
