Beijing 2008 has presented itself as a vast and perplexing array of messages, a mixture of economic, social, political and cultural motives. For China, Beijing 2008 was unique, an integral part of nation-building and a cornerstone to confirm their existence as an emerging power in the world of sport which in turn awakened self-confidence. For Indonesia, there was an expectation that Beijing 2008 would bring a 'nurturance effect' for enhancing sport development, including the improvement of sport performance. Supported by Chinese immigrants who have lived in Indonesia for many years and strengthened by psychological and cultural bonding between the two nations, Beijing 2008 has acted as a catalyst to generate Indonesia's self esteem. © 2010 Taylor & Francis.
