Writing is one of the pivotal skills in the learning process of Indonesian language education in higher education. Hence, this research aimed to analyze the correlation between students’ understanding of scientific articles and their writing skills in higher education. This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlation design to examine the connection between these variables. The research subjects consisted of 45 university students from a private university in Bekasi City, Indonesia. Data were collected through a test measuring students’ understanding of scientific articles and a writing test. To analyze the data, a linear regression test was conducted. The results revealed that students’ understanding of scientific articles had a significant positive effect on their writing skills. In conclusion, students' writing skills could be predicted by their understanding of scientific articles. These findings suggest that the Indonesian language learning process in higher education should focus on enhancing students’ understanding of scientific articles as a means to improve their writing skills. For future research, it is essential to develop learning strategies that foster students’ understanding of scientific articles and examine their effect on writing skills. © 2026 GMP Press and Printing.
